There is hardly any other movie Girish Karnad has been imprinted in my mind since childhood,That's Cheluvi in Hindi and Flowering Tree in English।
Year released 1992, This particular movie premiered on DD Channel and it was during the Children's Film Festival.Its amazing that DD still has its own pocketful of surprises when it comes to movies like these.Its about a girl who has mystical powers to turn into a fragile tree but at the same time yield some exotic and rare flowers,She would be lovingly tended by her sister,This was a secret and no body knew the origin of the flowers,however any one who smelled the flowers would love to buy them again and again,this happened to Kumar who was obsessed with these flowers he decides to buy the whole basket from the sisters.Kumar falls in love with Cheluvi. Kumar coaxes cheluvi to let out her little secret. Cheluvi is reluctant but yet gives away the secret to Kumar,who takes her to the private pool and tends to her as she becomes a tree,her flowers drop into the pool but the flowing water carries out the flowers along with them and the children of the house also wittness her becoming a tree.The children later force her into the forest,and break her branches when she becomes a tree. And run away abandoning Cheluvi,Cheluvi is unable to regain her human form due to the missing branches.A poor wood cutter notices her plight in the forest and carries her home.Kumar misses his wife and is depressed,Cheluvi requests the wood cutter to place her in front of her husband house,People witness the freak of nature,And finally kumar realises that it is his wife lying in the courtyard.Cheluvi says that she will be able to regain her human form if he is able to find her missing branches.Over joyed kumar decides to take her into the forest,but to his despair many trees are felled and he is unable to get her branches.There is sadness on their faces and the movie ends.

This movie has a lot of hidden messages - A strong message against deforestation, About a essence of a woman, her nature of giving , Cheluvi would earn a living with her sister by selling these flowers yet she lived for her sister. When she married she gave her self to her husband letting out her deepest secret and to the level of sharing this with the little children who promised to take care of her but on the contrary abused her. Its about the different roles a woman plays,But ultimately portraying her giving nature.This movie also has a spiritual touch of some sort,It also creates a fragrance in your mind about the flower even though you haven't smelled it, The village atmosphere and the forest setting that some people would like to go back to.

There were some painful moments when cheluvi’s husband is searching for the branches to rejuvenate his wife. This human way of representation of tree-life is really fantastic.I feel that you should see this movie once.

LOVE AFFAIRS OF ACTRESS MADHUBALA

Madhubala was born on 14th february 1933 which was a Valentines Day to a pathan family. It is a great coincidence that such a luminous beauty was born on Valentines Day. It seems that those women who are born on Valentines Day and who are also very beautiful are bound to have lots of love affairs during their lifetime. Madhubalas father Attaulla Khan, an orthodox Pathan was very possessive of Madhubala. She was under clutches all her life. Madhubalas real name was Mumtaz Jahan Begum nicknamed as Majhlee Appa. She was born in poverty and was 5th child of 11 children. It was Madhubalas tragedy that she was diagnosed with a hole in her heart during her early childhood. Her father hid this fact from film producers. She even went to England for treatment. But as she was in advanced stage and as Doctors could not perform any surgery she had to come back to India without any treatment. Due to her fathers obsession of not allowing her to mingle with anybody she never found true love during her lifetime. He followed her right from his home to studios and back. She used to keep a diary on daily basis where she used to keep acurate account of daily events of her life.This diary could have unfolded many of Madhubalas secrets, especially about her love life. But unfortunately her father decided to bury her diary along with her in her grave.

Some of her love affairs are with:

Childhood Friend Latif: Latif lived in Delhi. while moving from Delhi to Mumbai madhubala gave him a red rose: an indication of her love. He had kept this rose till she died and placed on her grave 30 years later. Now a retired IAS officer, he still goes to her grave on 23rd February and places a red rose on it.

Director Kidar Sharma: He gave her first break in his film. It was a love at first sight. She never reciprocates him as she thought that if she waits somewhat longer she may find a better person.

Director Kamal Amrohi: The Magic formula of film Mahal directed by Kamal Amrohi worked becoz the director and heroine were in deep love with each other. Father Attaullah khan had no objection on this affair. They may have gotten married but for possessive mind of Madhubala amrohi was a Muslim. And Islam allowed upto 4 wives provided that first wife gave consent to her husband for second marriage. She offered him lakhs of rupees and insisted that he leave his first wife. But Amrohi remained loyal to his first wife and told Madhubala bluntly that he may be selling dialogue stories to film industry, but cannot sell his wife and children and nor his conscience! So she broke off with him,never to see him again. However Amrohi got married to Mina Kumari(The Tragedy Queen) later.

Actor Premnath: Film Badal was the first movie of Madhubala with Premnath as hero. On the first day of shooting, before shooting started, Madhubala entered makeup room of Premnath and quickly handed him a fully blossomed red rose and a note. Puzzled Premnath read the note which said if you love me, please accept the rose, otherwise return it. Premnath was stunned. Without hesitation, Premnath accepted the rose and tucked it into the button hole of his coat and said to her Kubool hai, Kubool hai. After few weeks they broke off. Reason was a mystery as it had started from Madhubala's side. Later on Premnath came to know she did the same with Ashok Kumar. Then he got furious and decided not to see her again.

Actor Dilip Kumar: Dilip Kumar was also a Pathan. Her love affair with Dilip Kumar started when she was just 17 years old. Her father started to worry that if Madhubala gets married to Dilip Kumar,he would loose the financial support that Madhubala offered to Khans entire family as she was the sole breadwinner for Attaullah Khan family.It has been said that Dilip Kumar had insisted that if they were to marry, Madhubala would have to break all ties with her family. However their relationship continued for number of years. Finally they broke off due to her father huge impositions.

During the controversial period of B.R chopra's film Naya Daur in which Madhubala was dropped and was replaced by Vyjayantimala, love between the couple got revealed to the public as Dilip Kumar declared in the court that he loved Madhubala and will continue to love her until his death. Finally they broke off due to her father huge impositions and this whole court drama.

Then came K.Asifs Mugal-e-Azam. Madhubala had to fulfill this contract despite her broken relationship with Dilip Kumar. The film took incredible 10 years to complete and ironically followed the graph of their romantic affair. Dilip Kumar was very bitter and was not even talking to Madhubala except when shooting required a dialogue delivery with her. Under these conditions, it is remarkable that Madhubala Maintained her composure and gave her best for the film with her superb acting. Film Mughal-e-Azam immortalized Madhubala.

Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto(Former Priminister of Pakistan): Bhutto used to visit the sets of Mugal-e-Azam in Mumbai studios just to see Madhubala. Especially, on the sets when the song Mohe Panghat Pe Nandlal Ched Gayo re was being picturized. Although he was not part of Mumbai film industry but obsessed with Madhubalas beauty. After few years he left Mumbai and settled pemanently in Sind,Pakistan.

Actor/Singer Kishore Kumar: Soon after Madhubala's break up with Dilip Kumar she married acor/singer Kishore Kumar. Madhubala needed stability in her life and Kishore at that time needed financial help. Madhubala had severe health problems and had no time to take care of his financial problems. Eventually song Mere Sapno Ki Rani from film Aradhana clicked after which Kishore Kumar never looked back. Madhubala's terminal illness confined her to her house which caused huge amounts of tension between the married couple. Madhubala passed away on Feb 23,1969 on a Sunday Morning when she had just turned 36 years old.

Bollywood babes and their thing for second hand husbands..

I have often mulled over this and it doesn‘t seem like just another co-incidence to me. What keeps me wondering is the fact that most Bollywood heroines have this major thing going for either married or divorced men!And mind you, it‘s not a new phenomenon. Years back, Shabana Azmi married Javed Akhtar who left Honey Irani and children Farhan and Zoya to be with her. Soni Razdan chose to be the second wife of the director who gave her the only good roles of her career- Mahesh Bhatt (show of gratitude, should we say?)
Dream girl Hema Malini broke many hearts when she hitched her wagon with the much married Dharmendra who had a wife and two grown up sons to look after.In fact, South Indian heroines coming to Bollywood had become ‘in‘ famous for ‘stealing other women‘s husbands.‘ Jaya Prada had got married to Srikanth Nahata who was not single either. Before that, Vyjantimala married Dr. Bali, a married man, after an alleged affair with the happily married (or so they thought) Raj Kapoor. Earlier, the legendary love affair of Raj Kapoor and Nargis became a much discussed subject!

In the mid 90s, I remember many die hard fans hoped their once upon a time numero uno heroine Sridevi with a ‘career on the slowdown mode‘ needed to settle down fast, as her biological clock was ticking away(guess she was hitting her late 30s then). And then there was Juhi Chawla who was linked up to Neetu Singh‘s ‘perfect husband‘ Rishi Kapoor( not sure whether they were just rumours or something was actually cooking up between the two, but as they say there is no smoke without fire) and later chose to marry widower industrialist Jai Mehta, some say to honour what was the last wish of her mother. Juhi somehow manages to continue with her good girl image on and off the screen!

When Mahima Chaudhury‘s pregnancy made much news, she revealed to the world that she was married to divorcee father Bobby Mukherjee in the US.
Rani Mukerji and Aditya Chopra‘s alleged affair which led to a ‘roka‘ ceremony (or whatever!) and Adi‘s separation from wife Payal whom his parents really liked, has created enough turmoil and disturbance in the household as well as the Yash Raj office

And serial dater Sushmita Sen has a long history with married men. Her affair with Vikram Bhatt almost broke up his home, and then there was Sanjay Narang and more lately Manav Menon. Amisha Patel took up where Sushmita left. She fought with her folks, shared her home and hearth with Vikram Bhatt for years until the recent break up and her discovery of Mr Right in London.Priyanka Chopra‘s affair with Akshay Kumar threatened his marriage with Twinkle Khanna big time.

As for once upon a time oomph babe Urmila Matondkar, rumours are still rife that she was once actually or almost married to Ram Gopal Varma and later dated a married guy with a big time jewellery business.

Kiran Rao was no actress but an assistant director. But filmdom‘s heady charms got the better of her and she aptly followed the footsteps of our leading ladies by getting bowled over by Bollywood‘s only intellectual actor Aamir Khan. Ditto for Jessica Heines, who came all the way from Britain to write about Bollywood and allegedly had an illegitimate son Jaan with Aamir.

The latest to join the bandwagon is Shilpa Shetty who was nonexistent on our radars till something called ‘Big Brother‘ happened. She is seeing the separated Raj Kundra after surviving huge link ups rumours with her married director Anubhav Sinha in the past.

And as everybody is aware, Kareena Kapoor had a huge public break up with long time beau Shahid Kapur and landed up in the arms of Saif Ali Khan the one with an elderly wife Amrita, two kids and an Italian girlfriend in his track record. And who can forget that Bebo‘s special something for Hrithik Roshan some years back was keeping his dear wife Sussanne terribly unhappy for long.

If you go to look at it, among top stars of today only Aishwarya( she never really dated any hitched men) and Madhuri( regardless of the affair with Sanjay Dutt) have settled down with bachelors.

So what‘s with Bollywood babes choosing married men for marriage or romance? I have actually read one of them explain it famously; "It‘s all about their experience of life. They have seen it all. Their ability to understand you, pamper you and not repeat the same mistake is alluring to women. It‘s dangerous ground to tread. But perhaps this is the most defining moment in a woman‘s life." "These heroines too have seen it all. They have gone through things like the casting couch which is an open secret in the industry. So these married and experienced men are good match for them. As simple as that."

Or should we be blaming the men going through major mid life crises in their lives, for leading these pretty and glamorous girls astray? Do they feel good about being seen with the perfect arm candies?It‘s Bollywood and everything here gets complicated. I have found no proper explanation yet. I still keep wondering and speculating.

Get ready to witness some ‘Rakhi drama‘, Technicolor, dolby, big screen and all. The dramatic trauma queen or was that traumatic drama queen, has been signed by Yash Raj to play her almost too real, real life role- that of a nautankiwali. Art imitating life or life imitating art or just a really bad joke on the audience? Regardless, its time for a double whammy celebration bash, as this film marks the entry of Rakhi into the Yash Raj camp! And Rakhi would be sharing screen space with Shahid Kapoor and Rani Mukerji, no less. b

Anyhow, this upcoming, yet untitled venture will be directed by Anurag Singh who earlier assisted Sanjay Gadhvi in ‘Dhoom: 2‘. The source says, "Rakhi will be playing the character of a dancer from ‘Bhand Samaj‘ who does nautanki on the streets and entertains people. She will also be dancing in marriages and her character in the movie is a really important role. She gets a lot of space in the second half of the film. Rakhi bagged this role because of her dancing skills and because the role required a girl like her." A girl like her? The‘Pardesia‘ dance number, ‘Big Boss‘ and ‘Nach Baliye 3‘ changed quite a few things for her. She is clearly getting noticed by top film makers. K Jo‘s ‘Koffee with Karan‘ happened and Rakhi has also recently shot for an item song in Rakesh Roshan‘s ‘Krazzy 4‘. And boy, all these controversies keep her going in a big way. Like her major fall out with live- in boy friend Abhishek Awasthi, after which she kicked him out of her house and his public apology to her where she also got a chance to slap him on national television. That‘s women power, Rakhi style! Now with Rakhi‘s gradual rise in status, there are more reasons for Abhishek to stay back with her and double up as her secretary too. Abhishek is happy playing the perfect sidekick. And considering his skill set, that‘s the role of a lifetime for him!

History of CHESS!!

The game of chess is thought to have originated in what is now northern India or Afganistan sometime before 6OO AD: the oldest written references to chess date from then, but there are unverified claims that chess existed as early as 100 AD. Interest in chess followed early trade routes out of India. One variation of chess (called Shogi) is now popular in Japan; another variation is played in China. Many local variations in chess rules persist even today in isolated rural areas, for example in India.
The first international chess tournament was the London Tourney of 1851, won by Adolf Anderssen of Germany, who then became known UNOFFICIALLY as the world's best chess player, though he did not receive any award or title.

The first great American-born chess player was Paul Morphy, of Irish ancestry, who lived in the civil war era. He travelled to Europe in the 185O's, beating all challengers, including Adolf Anderssen. However, the English champion of the time (Staunton) refused to play, so Morphy never became a world chess champ.
The first OFFICIAL championship chess tournament was played in 1866, also in London, with sandclocks to restrict the length of a game. This tournament was won by Steinitz, a Bohemian (Czechoslovakian) Jew, who then became the world's first OFFICIAL chess champion, holding this title until 1894.

Emanuel Lasker, an American born in Germany, also Jewish, became champion by defeating Steinitz, remaining champion until 1921, at which time Jose Capablanca, a Cuban, took the title until 1927. Many people today consider Capablanca as one of the top 3 chess players who ever lived, the others being Morphy and Bobby Fischer.
